In 1972, at the height of his extraordinary rise in Hong Kong cinema, Bruce Lee honoured a promise to his longtime friend Unicorn Chan by lending his martial arts expertise to The Unicorn Palm (Fist of Unicorn).

Their friendship stretched back many years, long before Bruce became an international star. When Unicorn was given his opportunity as a leading man, Bruce kept his word and became involved in the production as martial arts adviser, helping devise and refine fight sequences and bringing his own ideas to the film’s action.

Bruce Lee — The Unicorn Palm revisits this fascinating and often overlooked chapter of Bruce Lee’s Hong Kong years through a highly visual collector’s publication.

Drawing upon rare photographs, original production imagery, contemporary Hong Kong magazine reports, archival material and first-hand recollections, the publication explores the making of the film, Bruce’s contribution to its martial arts, his friendship with Unicorn Chan, and the controversy that subsequently surrounded his involvement.

Period coverage from publications including New Martial Hero, Martial Magazine and International Screen provides a window into how the production and Bruce’s participation were reported at the time. 

At its heart, however, this is as much a story of friendship and loyalty as it is filmmaking — the story of Bruce Lee helping an old friend at a time when demands on his own career had never been greater.
